About Gepp & Sons

Our History

Here at Gepp & Sons we are proud of our history and our place in the local community. The firm was founded over two centuries ago and, for many years, continued as a small highly successful family practice.  Yet, the world was continuing to grow in complexity and, as forward thinking Solicitors, we needed to respond.

Our main office is in the city centre of Chelmsford where we were founded in 1768. We also have offices in the garrison town of Colchester where we specialise in both military and criminal law. We pride ourselves on being able to offer a complete service to both business and private clients, combining the highest standards of operation with a traditional personal approach.

The Firm is organised into several different departments, being Commercial LawCriminal LawDispute ResolutionEmployment LawFamily Law, Private Client (deailing with WillsProbate and Trusts), Commercial and Residential Property and Rural Services (Agriculture Law) with the legal staff in each department being considerable experts in their field. Life itself, of course, is not so neatly divided, therefore all the staff within our departments work closely together calling on each other’s services as and when required.

Gepp & Sons are proud of the fact that the Office of Under Sheriff of Essex has been held by a Partner of the firm for some 120 years. As an integral part of this appointment, we also act as Solicitors to the County’s High Sheriff, a position we have now held continuously since 1922.

Our local knowledge and contacts are second to none

We have highly skilled specialists in all of our service areas, so you get expert attention every time and because all our departments work closely together when you need more than one type of specialist lawyer, we can do your work in-house, reducing time, effort and most importantly your costs.

We work for a wide range of clients from large businesses to small families and no matter what the problem is we will put you in touch with the best people to help and advise you as quickly and as cost effectively as we can.

Our Qualifications and memberships

We are firmly committed to working to the standards of operation laid down by the Legal Aid Agency and the nationally recognised ISO 9001 Quality Standard, which we achieved in April 2000 through our association with LawNet, the National Network of Independent Law Firms.

The Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) is a scheme created by the Law Society to ensure firms deliver the highest quality services to their clients. At Gepps, we realise that the buying and selling of a house is likely to be one of the most important transactions most people make. We aim to make that transaction as transparent, smooth and enjoyable as possible and having been CQS accredited, you can be safe in the knowledge that Gepp will keep you completely informed throughout the entire sale or purchase process.

We are also proud to be members of the Forces Law Network, a network of Military Solicitors throughout the United Kingdom who offer a comprehensive range of legal services to Service Personnel and retired Service Personnel.

Last but not least, we have also achieved accreditation under the Law Society’s Law Management quality mark, Lexcel, which has been specifically designed to ensure that law firms meet high standards of client care and business management.
